9th EViR Funders’ Forum meeting March 2020

Nine countries were represented by participants from Australia, Belgium, Canada, Germany, Netherlands, Republic of Ireland, Sweden, UK and USA.

A broad range of organisations was present at the meeting, from large to small funding institutions with different remit, concerns and challenges.

Day 1

  • 9:00- 9:15 Introduction and overview of the EViR meeting
  • 9:15-9:30 Welcome to Berlin
  • 9:30-11:00 IMPACT:
    • Reflection on how funders had been using the EVIR principles in their work.
      The survey allowed us to assess how funders had been using the EVIR principles in their work.
      Output/outcome: Share and celebrate and identify potential case studies for website.
    • Update on EViR Funders Forum secretariat. Output/outcome: Keep members informed of developments of membership model.
  • 11:15-12:15 CONTRIBUTE
    • The use of reviews of the evidence done systematically ahead of new primary research (linking with EBRN, EVBRES). This item linked with guiding principles 2 and 9.Output/outcome: Members shared learning from funders who had implemented this policy and to agree implications to inform others considering policy in this area. This informed the EU research project EVBRES who would ultimately publish guidance.
  • 13:15-14:45 LEARN
    • Automated tools for use by Health Related Funders.Output/outcome: Members shared learning and knowledge of innovative approaches.
  • 14:45-16:15 COLLABORATE
    • Open discussion to determine new areas for Collaboration and Contribution.This session built into the Washington session. It aimed to identify new workstreams for people to collaborate as some of the already ongoing collaborations are ending. As part of the session, attendees were asked if they would be interested in leading one of the new groups.

      Output/outcome: Identify and initiate new workstream(s). Identify workstream leads and members.

    • Approaches to self-audit against the principles.PCORI had done some work on Self-audit – Kelly Dunham and Anne Cody shared lessons learned and provide an update on ongoing initiatives.

      Outcome/output: Members shared learning of those that have done a self audit and agreed on guidance for others.

  • 16:30-17:30 SHARE
    • Open top of mind session: Discussion about some priority topics suggested by members of the forum.Output/outcome: This item built on the top of the mind session from Washington. Some of the items from the discussion were then included in the Collaborate Session. The pre-meeting survey also provided further items to be discussed.
    • Peer-to-Peer Scheme – Connecting individuals/groups from two different funders with common goals.Output/outcome: Members shared current challenges for peer support.

    • Future of publications. Output/outcome: What are the current trends affecting the publication of research and what does the future hold?
